PREAMBLE

We, the people of the Laurel Wreath Honor Society of Austin Peay University, in order to promote and protect the rights to academic pursuit and disciplines, promote character and initiative through a responsible and effective organization, do ordain and establish this Constitution.

 

ARTICLE I - Name

The name of this organizationshall be the LAUREL WREATH HONOR SOCIETY of the students of Austin Peay State University and shall be referred hereinafter in this Constitution as LWHS.

 

ARTICLE II - Purpose

The purpose of this organization shall be to promote and recognize academic excellence among the students of Austin Peay State University without regard to race, nationalality, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability or association.

 

ARTICLE III - Membership

Section 1:

Full membership to LWHS shall be open to all registered, full-time students of Austin Peay State University who have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours at the University. Membership shall also be given to freshmen on an honorary basis until the hours and grade point average requirements have been obtained.

Section 2:

Members must maintain a minimum 3.15 overall grade point average in addition to a 3.0 grade point average in their major to maintain current membership.

Section 3:

Honorary membership may be conferred upon student candidates who have completed at least two courses in the Honors Program.

 

ARTICLE IV - Officers

Section 1:

This society shall be governed by the Executive Officers of the Society. The executive Officers of the Society shall be a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Officers shall be elected in April of the Spring semester.

Section 2:

The President of LWHS shall have the sole power to nominate members in the society of good standing to fill vacancies of Executive Office if such offices become vacant between elections (appoointment shall become effective with a three-fourths vote of the members present). These officers shall serve until the next regularly scheduled Spring elections.

Section 3:

In the event that the President of LWHS is unable to serve in that capacity, the Vice-President of LWHS shall assume the office of President and shall appoint a new Vice-President.

Section 4:

The President of LWHS shall have the power to appoint members of the society in good standing as special project chairs in the event that such chairs are required.

 

ARTICLE V - Advisor(s)

Section 1:

The advisor(s) to the LWHS shall be a member of the faculty or administration of Austin Peay State University.

Section 2:

Advisors shall be honorary members of LWHS and are required to attend one meeting per month. Failure to attend these meetings may lead to a reconsideration of the advisor status by the membership.

 

ARTICLE VI - Meetings

Section 1:

Meetings may be called by the President of LWHS, the Vice-President of LWHS, or one of the advisors of LWHS.

Section 2:

The Executive Officers of LWHS shall meet a minimum of once per semester. However, EC meetings may be called by any member of the Executive Committee.

Section 3:

The agenda for each meeting shall be planned and approved by the Executive Committee of LWHS.

Section 4:

A minimum of four (4) meetings shall be held each semester of the academic year and shall be presided over by the President of the Society, or if absent, by the Vice-President of the Society.

 

ARTICLE VII - Amendments

Section1:

Amendments to this Constitution may be proposed by any three (3) members of the Society in good standing or by any one of the Executive Officers.

Section 2:

Amendments to this Constitution shall take effect immediately upon two-thirds (2/3) vote of the members of LWHS in good standing present at any meeting of hte Society.

 

ARTICLE VIII - By-Laws

Section1:

Appropriate By-Laws to carry out the provisions of the Constitution shall be adopted by the members of the LWHS after the adoption of the Constitution.

Section 2:

Amendments to the By-Laws shall take effect immediately upon two-thirds (2/3) vote of the members of LWHS in good standing present at any meeting of the Society.

 

ARTICLE IX - Adoption

This Constitution shall become effective upon its passage, according to the Amendment rules of LWHS. Previous Constittions and By-Laws shall be declared null and void upon passage of this Constitution. The President of the Univeristy shall have the power to review this Constitution and its By-Laws. All business which had been conducted prior to the passage of this Constitution will be considered legal and valid under this Constitution.
